Young
wins fan vote on NFL.com and via Sprint wireless
service
MIAMI
(Feb. 2007) -- Tennessee Titans quarterback VINCE
YOUNG is the 2006 DIET PEPSI NFL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR,
Diet Pepsi and the National Football League
announced today.
Young
led all rookies with 12 touchdown passes and ranked
second among rookies with 2,199 passing yards as he
led the Titans to an 8-8 record and within one game
of the AFC Playoffs. Young took over as the starting
quarterback in Week 4 and went 8-5 as a starter. He
also rushed 83 times for 552 yards and seven
touchdowns. After the Titans started 2-7, Young led
the youthful team on a six-game winning streak.
During
that period, he threw for 249 yards and two
touchdowns, and ran for 69 yards and another score
in a 24-21 win over the New York Giants; threw for
163 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 78 yards
in a 20-17 victory over the AFC Champion
Indianapolis Colts; and threw for 183 yards and two
touchdowns, and ran for 61 yards and a touchdown in
a 30-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills. Young, who
attended the University of Texas, was nominated for
six Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week awards,
winning four times.
More
than 363,500 fan votes were submitted for the 2006
DIET PEPSI NFL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR on NFL.com and via
Sprint wireless service from January 5 through
January 29. Over the course of the season, more than
one million fan votes were submitted for the weekly
and annual DIET PEPSI NFL ROOKIE awards.
Young
was one of five finalists for the honor. The other
finalists were running back JOSEPH ADDAI of the
Indianapolis Colts, running back REGGIE BUSH of the
New Orleans Saints, running back MAURICE JONES-DREW
of the Jacksonville Jaguars and defensive back-kick
returner-punt returner DEVIN HESTER of the Chicago
Bears.
The
five finalists were selected for their outstanding
performances throughout the 2006 NFL season. Each
week, five nominees were chosen for Diet Pepsi NFL
Rookie of the Week and NFL fans voted for the winner
on NFL.com and via Sprint wireless. Those results
were used to help determine the finalists.
This
is Pepsi’s fifth year as the official soft drink
sponsor of the NFL and the second year that Diet
Pepsi is presenting the NFL Rookie of the Year
award.

Pepsi
supports "America Supports
You": Sailors, Marines to Get
Care Packages
American
Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON
– Navy
Morale, Welfare and Recreation has
teamed up with 21 corporate sponsors
to provide gift packages to
forward-deployed sailors and Marines
in Southwest Asia this holiday season.
More than 8,000 packages have been
assembled by MWR volunteers in Bahrain
and will be hand-delivered to sailors
and Marines by Christmas.
“Thanks to the continued support of
MWR’s corporate sponsors, sailors
and Marines who are far from home will
once again receive gift packages this
holiday season,” Bill Winters, head
of Navywide Commercial Sponsorship
program, said. “The holiday gift
package program continues to grow in
its fifth year, as we work with our
sponsors to make the season a little
brighter for men and women in
uniform.”
The packages include food, comfort and
hygiene items from corporate sponsors
like Pepsi, Frito Lay and Gatorade,
among others. Veterans of Foreign
Wars and Ladies Auxiliary VFW also
provided 60-minute prepaid phone
cards. Each gift package is different,
as additional products from local
sponsors were secured at the
installation level through the
Navy’s commercial sponsorship
program.
“Our Pepsi military team efforts
are driven by a strong desire to
support our men and women in uniform,
especially those that are forward
deployed,” said Bruce Bennett,
director, Military Sales, Pepsi Cola.
“We could not reach out to many of
these servicemembers on our own. It is
only through programs such as this
that we can give something back to the
folks that truly deserve it.”
Commercial sponsorship is an
authorized way for Navy MWR activities
to offset the cost of programs and
services, Winters said. Sponsorship is
received in the form of in-kind
services and financial support in
exchange for public recognition,
advertising consideration, and/or
product promotion at MWR events.
