all-new Volvo V70 even more star quality

•
Driver, passenger and luggage ride in first class
When
development work on the successor to today’s Volvo V70 got
under way, the design team at Volvo Cars were faced with an
uncompromising challenge:
Increase
the emphasis on luxury and dynamics – while at the same time
making the model even more versatile and functional.
“The
estate car is the jewel in the crown of our model range. Our
task was to refine it carefully to give the all-new V70 even
more star quality,” says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve
Mattin.
Volvo’s
estate cars are strongly linked with the Volvo brand’s
development. They have been changed through continuous
refinement ever since 1953 when Volvo launched the PV 445.
What
was originally an out-and-out practical and spacious car has
been continuously developed and now has exclusive comfort and
dynamic driving properties that put it in the same class as
large luxurious sedan models. What is more, the all-new Volvo
V70 takes a huge step forward in the field of intelligent
functionality.
“Today’s
V70 has a well-balanced size and a particularly attractive
dual personality in the form of spacious versatility in
combination with sporty dynamism. We have reinforced both
these elements at the same time as we have given the all-new
V70 a generous dose of luxury to increase its premium level
even further,” says Steve Mattin.
More
sporty impression
The
front of the all-new V70 incorporates a unique soft nose with
a black egg-crate grille featuring chrome in the vertical
bars. This gives the luxury estate car a different, sportier
face.
The
climbing waistline of the side also contributes to the
forward-leaning, dynamic stance, which is further reinforced
with the help of the black pillars between the side windows.
“The
blacked-out pillars cause the windows to visually flow
together in one single element. This together with the chrome
moulding around the entire window creates an aura that is
luxurious yet sporty at the same time,” says Stefan Jansson,
head of exterior design for the all-new V70.
More
dynamic tailgate
From
the side the tailgate’s upper section has a sportier, more
forward-leaning stance.
“But
we have not compromised one single bit on the functionality
that characterises our estate cars. The new overlapping
tailgate takes the upper part of the tail lamps with it as it
rises to make the opening even more generous. In this way, the
space behind the tailgate is larger than before and easy to
load. The luggage volume has even grown by 60 litres compared
with the current V70,” says Stefan Jansson.
At
the rear, the Volvo name on the tailgate features more
pronounced lettering with wider spacing than before. A new
feature that was first shown on the XC60 Concept in Detroit
this year.
Viewed
from behind, the tailgate makes a strong visual link with the
new C30. All the lights above the waistline, both at the side
and the high-mounted third brake light, are LED brake lights.
The fixed position lights on the body side take on an added
role as supplementary brake lights if the cargo is so large
that the driver has to drive with the tailgate secured partly
open.
Another
smart detail is that the tailgate’s glass window goes
further down at the sides to give the driver added rearward
visibility.
New
colors inside and out
The
all-new V70 is available in 16 different exterior colours, two
of which are entirely new. The new liveries, Seashell and
Glacier Blue, were developed to emphasise the estate car’s
sportier and more luxurious aura.
Inside
the car there are six upholsteries in three colours. In
addition to Sandstone Beige and Anthracite Black, there is a
Cranberry Red highlight colour where the red detailing on the
seats and door panels contrasts elegantly with the rest of the
black trim.
“Inspiration
for this warm red shade came from something that is just so
typically Swedish – the red-painted cottages found
everywhere throughout rural Sweden. Using this colour as a
starting point, we created a nuance that has just the right
depth and width to be viable in an international
perspective,” explains Boel Hermansson, head of colors and
material design for the all-new V70.
Scandinavian
form and functionality
The
interior of the all-new V70 is an example of Scandinavian
design at its best. Every little detail has been designed with
a one hundred percent focus on both clean form and intelligent
functionality.
Comfort
in the front seat features superb seats and ergonomically
designed instruments – including an elegant, super-slim
centre stack and an audio system of absolute world class.
The
integrated dual child booster cushions can be adjusted in two
steps and the 40/20/40-split rear seat has integrated seat
belts. The lightweight design of the rear backrest and the
simple folding mechanism are other examples of improved
functionality for passengers.
The
luggage rides in first class too
In
the all-new V70, everything and everyone rides in first class.
Even the luggage compartment and all its options and
accessories have been designed to meet the very highest
demands on luxury and intelligent functionality.
“The
idea is that the luggage compartment really should look as
spacious and luxurious as it is,” says Jonathan Disley, who
has designed the interior of the all-new V70.
Among
the smart details in the luggage compartment is a storage
space under the floor which is locked when the tailgate is
shut. A power tailgate is an option and among the range of
accessories are a sliding load floor and a smart storage
system with side rails and sliding load hooks that can be
tailored to meet the owner’s individual needs.
“In
what is the most complete estate car on the market, the
luggage and other cargo should naturally ride as comfortably
as the passengers do. That’s why every little detail in the
luggage area and all the accessories have been specially
designed,” says Jonathan Disley.

The
all-new Volvo V70
– still number one in the estate car segment
•
Maintaining leadership in the segment
•
Elevated combination of luxury and versatility
•
Target 75,000 cars per year
•
Sweden the largest market
•
Sales start in August 2007
•
World breakthrough in child safety
Backed
by 54 years of ongoing refinement and improvement, Volvo Cars
is still the global leader in the segment for large estate
cars.
Now
the all-new Volvo V70 is making its entry onto the market with
an innovative combination of luxury and versatility.
“This
segment has been our specialty ever since we invented it back
in the 1950s. Our competitors can count on us remaining number
one in the future too. In the all-new V70, rear passengers and
luggage both ride in first class,” says Volvo Cars President
and CEO Fredrik Arp.
The
segment for estate cars is growing and the demands on the cars
themselves are increasing as more and more sedan owners
appreciate the added versatility that this roomier car type
offers – without having to compromise on design, comfort or
driving dynamics.
“The
attitude towards the estate car has undergone a significant
change. With greater focus on design and comfort, the all-new
V70 is both luxurious and practical, not just for families
with growing children but also for all active people with high
demands on their cars. In fact, we expect that half of all V70
buyers won’t actually be families with children,” explains
Fredrik Arp.
Completely
new vehicle architecture
By
using a completely new vehicle architecture, Volvo’s
designers and engineers have gained a number of advantages:
•
For the first time ever there is a six-cylinder engine under
the bonnet of a Volvo V70, which has a broader than ever
engine range, from two sixes (the new 285 hp T6 and the 3.2
which produces 238 hp) to fuel-efficient diesels and the
bio-ethanol FlexiFuel model producing 145 hp.
•
Front seat comfort has been considerably enhanced, with superb
seats and ergonomically designed instruments. This naturally
also includes the elegant, super-slim centre console and the
world-class audio system.
•
Space in the rear seat has grown compared with the current
V70. Families with young children now also have access to a
world breakthrough: dual built-in child booster cushions that
can be adjusted in two stages. The inflatable curtains have
been extended by 60 mm, and in combination with the new
booster cushions and the strong body side structure this
provides more children of different sizes with effective
protection in a side impact.
Still
a genuine estate car
Despite
its injection of comfortable luxury, the all-new V70 still
inherits its genes from classics such as the Volvo Duett,
Volvo 245 and Volvo 745. Here too Volvo is taking a huge
stride forward with a luggage area that has increased in both
volume and versatility.
A
number of smart new functional details and accessories allow
the V70 owner to individually adapt the car to suit his or her
specific needs. The rear seat’s 40/20/40 split makes it the
most flexible in the segment. Other smart examples include a
power tailgate, sliding load floor and a storage compartment
under the luggage area floor that locks when the tailgate
shuts.
“In
the leading estate car, the cargo should naturally ride as
comfortably as the passengers do. Every little detail in the
luggage compartment and all the accessories have been
specially designed to give the correct feeling of luxury
without compromising on the smart functionality that is and
remains our mark of honour,” says Volvo Cars Design Director
Steve Mattin.
The
rear of the all-new V70 has a more dynamic, more sculpted
shape than in today’s model. The eye can even discern a
forward-leaning upper tailgate section.
“Using
innovative design, we have once and for all put to bed the
boxy shape traditionally associated with our estate cars. From
the outside, the car has a dynamic stance. But with the help
of the smart overlapping tailgate, which takes the tail lamps
up with it, the space inside the car is larger than in the
previous V70,” says Steve Mattin.
Sales
target 75,000 cars
The
company’s target for the all-new V70 is an average of 75,000
cars a year. About 80 percent of the cars will go to Europe,
with the domestic Swedish market being without doubt the
largest, accounting for a third of the total volume.
The
all-new Volvo V70 is unveiled together with the all-new XC70
at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. Sales will start in
August, initially in Scandinavia. The other markets will
follow gradually during the rest of 2007.
“Since
first-class estate cars are intimately linked with our brand
name, it is vital that we retain the initiative. Personally, I
am fully convinced that the all-new V70 will attract both
established and new buyers. It is the ultimate estate car,
more luxurious, comfortable and practical than ever before,”
says Fredrik Arp.

Volvo C70 as one of their 'Top Safety Picks'. "For
more than 80 years, Volvo has built cars with Safety in
mind," states Anne Bélec, President and CEO, Volvo Cars
of North America. "We are extremely pleased to have done
well in the Institutes' testing program. From the very start
of our modern convertible program, our goal was to bring
advanced technology and engineering skills into this flagship
vehicle."
The
hot-selling Volvo C70 arrived in the U.S. market in 2006 and
has set the benchmark for convertible safety in regards to
occupant protection with a number of safety systems, including
the unique Inflatable Curtain for side impact protection, the
use of multiple grades of steel for frontal and rear
collisions, and Volvo's Roll Over Protection System (ROPS).

VOLVO XC70: REFINING THE PACKAGE OF SUCCESS
When the first XC model from Swedish auto marque Volvo took to
the American roads in 1997, sales success and an entirely new
Cross Country segment soon followed.
Ten year later, the third-generation XC70 makes its North
American debut by rolling into the spotlight at the New York
International Auto Show. The original recipe is still
intact, but now Volvo's crossover vehicle has added luxury as
well as even greater capabilities for adventure.
The original XC exceeded Volvo's sales expectations largely
based on the vehicle's appeal to consumers in the United
States. For them, the XC70 served the functionality of
an SUV, while providing the distinctive Volvo feel of a true
premium car. The term "crossover" emerged. More

quartet ranked as "best bets"
Nearly one quarter of Americans are considering buying a new
Toyota, while Ford is the top domestic manufacturer for brand
perception. Only five brands stand out from the competition
– Toyota, Ford, Honda, Volvo and Chevrolet.
The Car Book is considered to be the consumer’s best car
buying guide. In this year’s edition, which is the 27th, the
S40, V50, C70 (pictured), and V70 are all listed in the
“Best Bet” category. Story

Volvo XC90 for Pope Benedict XVI
Volvo Cars presented His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI,
with one of its Sport Utility Vehicles.
The keys of the car have been delivered to the Pope in the
Vatican, on Wednesday June 28th, with a short ceremony after
the Papal Audience.
On Wednesday June 28, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has received the
keys of the Volvo XC90 that Volvo Car Corporation has
presented him with.
The delivery of the keys to the Pope has taken place in the
Vatican, during a short ceremony after the Papal Audience.
To represent Volvo Cars, Gerry Keaney, Vice President Volvo
Car Corporation, Marketing Sales and Service, Pascal Bellemans,
President Volvo Auto Italia, and Michele Crisci, General
Manager Volvo Auto Italia attended.
The Volvo XC90 delivered to the Pope – and fitted for His personal use
– is a V8 version. It is a dark blue XC90 with light
interiors.
Since its debut, the Volvo XC90 has set the highest standards among SUV
when it comes to Safety, in all driving conditions and on any
surface. The AWD system (all-wheel drive) allows the car
excellent off-road behavior, while ROPS System helps the car
avoiding roll-over or reducing consequences of that type of
accident.
The Volvo XC90 has also been designed and built not only to protect
people on board, but also in order to enhance Safety
performances on other vehicles in case of impact.
"We are absolutely happy and proud of the opportunity we had to give
a car to the Pope. Safety has always been a no-compromise
must for Volvo; no doubt, our strong commitment to
safeguard lives could not get a higher and more touching
recognition", said Pascal Bellemans, President Volvo Auto
Italia.

Volvo
Safety, with Children in Mind
New
York (April, 2006) - For over 30 years, Volvo has developed
child safety systems to help protect its littlest passengers.
Throughout those years, Volvo held to the belief that safety
protection should be for all occupants, regardless of size or
age. While safety is paramount, Volvo also believes that
keeping children comfortable is in the best interest of
parents, as well as the children themselves.
The Beginning of Modern Child Safety
The
impetus for modern child safety was born in Sweden 1963. While
watching an American TV program, Bertil Aldman of Chalmers
University in Gothenburg noticed the position of the
astronauts in the Gemini space capsule. By lying on their
backs, in opposite direction to the force of acceleration,
they were better able to withstand the acceleration. Professor
Aldman believed that this principle could be applied to
protect a child in the event of a head-on collision. Story

Models Best in Interior Air Quality According to New Study
An independent survey carried out by the Ecology Center in
Detroit shows that the interiors of Volvo’s cars emit lower
levels of toxic substances than other car makes.
The Ecology Center recently
presented a study (Toxic at Any Speed: Chemicals in Cars &
the Need for Safe Alternatives) of the toxic chemicals used in
building car interiors. Flame retardant PBDE and phthalates,
whose main use is as a softener in plastics, were included in
the study. These chemical substances can migrate from plastics
and textiles, particularly at high temperatures. The car’s
occupants may thus be exposed to these substances, for
instance through the respiratory system. Certain types of
phthalates and flame retardants can for instance promote
genetic mutations and can subject car occupants to health
hazards. The survey reveals that the concentrations of PBDE in
dust and on the windscreen are up to five times higher than in
the homes of most people, and since many people today spend a
lot of time in their cars, car interiors thus have a
significant effect on human health. For
